My sister called to tell me she was looking for creative baby shower ideas. She was finally going to be a grandma and couldn’t wait to host a shower for the soon to be mom. I was more than happy to be a part of the planning for such a special event.
When my nephew and his wife got pregnant, my sister and brother-in-law were ecstatic. They had waited a long time to hear this sort of news. Her son was in his early forties. That’s a long time to wait to be grandparents.
These particular soon to be grandparents are the most giving people I know. Unbeknown to them while Bev (gramma) and I were busy planning a baby shower for the mom to be something special was being planned for Bev.
Her fellow employees who were also friends called yet more friends and tossed around the idea of a unique baby shower for grandma. There had been no babies staying at their house for over forty years as Eric is an only child. Everyone knew they could use lots of baby stuff.
The mom to be would be going back to work after her 4 weeks maternity leave. Bev and Ed were only too happy to be the lucky grandparents to help with the new baby. Yes, there was a crib up in the attic, but new safety regulations required a new crib. This is an expensive item but several friends got together and purchased a crib. Baby would be spending four days a week. Everyone felt that at this age it was better not to have to lean over the side of a pack and play (crib/play area) to lift their little angel out.
Since I was one of those friends who were excited to have a creative baby shower for Beverly, I suggested having it at her own home. No one would have to transport a lot of packages from the party venue to her house that way. We could even help set things up for her if she wanted us to.
Using Bev’s house had another advantage, we could decorate with angels. She collects angles and rainbows, since the new baby would definitely be her angel what better theme for her party. We just gathered up all of her angles and placed them strategically throughout the family room area. We spent nothing but our time to make the room look party ready. For ease of clean up we opted for paper products in the angle theme as well.
I’m sure you guessed we made angel food cakes to serve. Every guest insisted on bring food to make the party a success. We had set the time for just after she got home from work around 9:00 at night. A desert menu was the perfect option. Friends brought everything from strawberry pie to angel cookies.
I have to say that with her husband’s help we completely shocked her. The guests made sure she had everything she needed for the changes in her life.
How nice for mom or dad not to have to lug everything a newborn needs to grandma’s house each morning. She ended up being completely equipped for receiving a new child into her life. There were baby bottles, burping cloths, everything needed for bedding, a few baby sleepers and blankets, a bath tub with toys, diapers and books for reading in the future.
I expect these sort of creative baby shower ideas will be used by others who want to share the joy with a future grandma.
